Design Manuals

One of the major accomplishments and tangible results of Phase I of the ISIS mandate was the publication of four design manuals in 2001. These manuals were developed over a two-year period by Network participants under the leadership of the ISIS Theme Directors. The manuals were prepared for two reasons. The first is to provide practicing engineers with detailed guidelines regarding the use of FRPs and FOSs in the design and construction of civil engineering structures. The second is to provide a credible reference for the Code Committees to facilitate and accelerate changes to existing codes which did not envisage the use of advanced composite materials such as FRPs.

Over 1,600 of these technical design manuals have been distributed across Canada for use by practicing design engineers and students. An additional 400 copies have been purchased by engineers and academics in 34 countries around the world.

Manuals can be purchased in PDF format only by contacting the SIMTReC office at charleen.choboter@umanitoba.ca.  Online ordering is not available.

The design manuals that are currently available are as follows:

ISIS Design Manuals for Instructional Purposes

ISIS Canada headquarters will provide design manuals to students in Canadian universities or technical colleges providing the request and distribution is by an instructor who needs the manuals in order to teach his or her course on FRPs and FOS. There will be no charge for an electronic download of the manual. If hard copies are required, there will be a charge per book, plus shipping charges (please email Charleen Choboter at mailto:charleen.choboter@umanitoba.ca for a quote).

On making the request, the instructor shall provide the name and address of each student who is to receive a manual. This is needed to facilitate ISIS records of where the manuals are being used and for network follow-up in due course. It is also required to eliminate waste and the tendency to request more manuals than needed. Normally a maximum of 10 to 15 manuals will be needed by an instructor for a particular course. In the process, the instructor is to get a free manual as well. One instructor cannot order manuals for another instructor.

Requested manuals will not be mailed to the instructor until the foregoing conditions are met.
